Sheldon Schiffer is a filmmaker, media theorist, computer scientist and professor based in Los Angeles. He is known for intimate portrayals of human relationships using a psychological lens that shift the viewer through a characters' tragic and comic misperceptions. His dramatic portrayals of friendship, family and love blend genres of documentary, fantasy and comedy into stories that bring awareness of how we see and sense things in the world, and how we are seen in the world. He teaches Computer Science and Media Production, and conducts experiments with video game character AI.
Immersion in games is enhanced by the degree to which video game character animation emulates facial expressions found in cinema. Facial emotion corpora and neural networks make possible autonomous animations that do not rely on motion capture. This investigation demonstrates a workflow from developing and annotating a fictional scenario with actors, to producing a video emotion corpus, to designing training and validating a neural network, to analyzing the emotion data annotation, and finally to determining resemblant behavior.
